Multiplexing HPLC technique enables parallel HPLC systems to synchronize to a single mass spectrometer. Each HPLC operates independently, permitting multiple HPLC methods to run simultaneously. Multiplexed HPLC systems can increase the maximum utilization of the mass spectrometer while increasing productivity without compromising the results.

More than one (1) LC fluid channel containing at least an LC column is being active and “feeding” the same detector; The fluid channel can consist of more hardware, e.g., a separate injection valve. “Being active” means that samples are injected into the fluid streams either simultaneous or in a staggered fashion. The term “multiplexing” got wider use with the introduction of the MicroMass MUX hardware where 4 fluid streams were operated simultaneously feeding one mass spec. The key hardware piece is a “spinner” that selects a milliseconds long portion of one stream and sends it towards the mass spec before rotating to the next stream.
